Anne Wake, Ph.D. Psychologist
Dr. Anne Wake received her B.A. from Bryn Mawr College and her Ph.D.
in Clinical Psychology from the George Washington University. She interned
at Children's Hospital National Medical Center. Dr. Wake has long championed
the needs of learning disabled children. Her dissertation demonstrated
that children with untreated learning disabilities developed psychological
problems. Dr. Wake has testified about the needs of learning disabled
students before Congress as well as in local, state, and federal courts.
Her practice focuses on assessment and treatment of school-age children,
adolescents and adults. She serves as a skills group leader and individual
therapist in the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy program at the Wake
Kendall Group; and she has presented Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
in front of numerous professional groups, including the Maryland Psychological
Association and the Washington School for Psychiatry. Dr. Wake has taught
psychological assessment in the graduate school of the George Washington
University. She is on the Steering Committee of the Child and Adolescent
Psychotherapy Program of the Washington School for Psychiatry, and she
teaches and supervises for this postgraduate program.
Anne Kendall, Ph.D. Psychologist
Dr. Anne Kendall received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and then
earned a M.A.T. from Wesleyan University. After teaching high school
social studies for 7 years, she earned a Ph.D. in School Psychology
from the University of Maryland. Dr. Kendall worked at The Kingsbury
Center before starting this practice in 1990. Since then she has focused
on evaluation and treatment of children, adolescents and adults. In
addition she enjoys working with couples and doing family therapy. In
recent years she has occasionally served as a parent coordinator in
high conflict divorces. She has consulted with many area schools and
taught at American University, The Washington School of Psychiatry and
the Jewish Social Services Association. Currently Dr. Kendall is a member
of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy team at Wake Kendall and has presented
the DBT program in many settings. She is the coauthor with Georgia DeGangi
of Parenting the Hard-to-Manage Child: 25 Effective Tools which is to
be published by Routledge Press in the spring of 2007.
Carol Springer, M.Ed. Educational Diagnostician
Ms. Springer received her B.A. from Manhattanville College in philosophy
and her M.Ed. from The American University in Special Education: Learning
Disabilities. She received training in tutoring and in testing through
The Kingsbury Center where she was an educational diagnostician from
1974-1990 and Director of Diagnostic Testing from 1983-1990. She has
consulted in several of the area independent schools, providing psychoeducational
testing and consulting with teachers and tutors; and she has conducted
workshops for schools and The International Dyslexia Society. Ms. Springer
has also done admissions testing for independent schools. In 1991, Ms.
Springer entered private practice with The Wake Kendall Group where
she has continued doing school consulting, admissions testing for independent
schools and psychoeducational assessments of children and adults with
a focus on determining learning strengths and style and appropriate
educational placement and accommodations. Ms. Springer has been a member
of the International Dyslexia Society for many years.
Margaret Isenman, M.A.T. Educational Diagnostician
Ms. Isenman received a B.A. in history from Wellesley College and a
M.A.T. from Harvard University. She worked at The Kingsbury Center from
1977 - 1990, first as a tutor and then as an educational diagnostician.
Ms. Isenman joined the Wake Kendall Group in 1991 as an educational
diagnostician, conducting individual educational evaluations and consultations
and independent school admissions testing. She has been an educational
consultant at independent schools and has conducted workshops for schools
and parent groups. She administers the Admissions Testing component
of the Wake Kendall practice. Ms. Isenman lives in France for a portion
of the year and is able to offer consultation and some evaluation to
families who are currently living abroad but planning a move to the
Washington area.
Janell Schweickert, Ph.D. Psychologist
Dr. Schweickert received a B.A. from Swarthmore College and a Ph.D.
from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Although trained as
a research scientist, her focus of postdoctoral study was on acquired
language disorders in adults in collaboration with researchers at the
Massachusetts General Hospital. She accrued general knowledge of neuropsychological
testing through a postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychology at Boston
University Hospital. Upon moving to the DC area, she received training
in clinical psychology from George Washington University while performing
neuropsychological and psychological testing for the George Washington
University Medical Center. She did her clinical internship at George
Washington Hospital and returned to work at GW in assessment and therapy
before moving onto private practice. She completed the Child & Adolescent
Therapy program through the Washington School for Psychiatry. At The
Wake Kendall Group, Dr. Schweickert conducts neuropsychological, psychoeducational
and psychological assessments from age six years through adult. Her
therapy incorporates cognitive, supportive and insight-oriented approaches
with older adolescent and adult clients. She is a member of APA, DCPA,
and the Maryland Psychological Association.
Alison Weintraub, Ph.D. Psychologist
Dr. Weintraub received her B.A. in Psychology from Smith College, her
MA in Child Development from Tufts University and her Ph.D. in School
Psychology from University of Maryland. She has received intensive post
doctoral training in Child and Adolescent Therapy from The Washington
School of Psychiatry and in Dialectical Behavior Therapy through Behavioral
Tech. Dr. Weintraub has over thirty years of experience working with
children and adolescents. Prior to joining the Wake Kendall Group she
was an educational diagnostician and resource teacher at The Kingsbury
Center, Kingsbury Day School and American Embassy School in New Delhi,
India. She worked as a school psychologist in Fairfax County and Howard
County public schools. Dr. Weintraub has specialized in assessment and
treatment of young children (ages three to ten) and parent guidance,
and she has been a consultant at several independent schools. In addition
to continuing this work, she does psychological and psycho-educational
evaluations of students of all ages, child and adolescent therapy, and
Dialectical Behavior Therapy with adults.
Sunita Duggal, Ph.D. Psychologist
Dr. Sunita Duggal received a B.A. from Williams College in Williamstown,
MA, and a Ph.D. from the joint program in Developmental Psychology and
Adult Clinical Psychology at the University of Minnesota. After completing
a postdoctoral internship at the Western Psychiatric Institute &
Clinic in Pittsburgh, PA, Dr. Duggal supervised clinical research at
NIMH on the development of psychopathology in adolescents and was in
private practice in the Annapolis area. She joined the Wake Kendall
Group in 2001 and has developed a broad therapy practice with some emphasis
on parenting work, adopted children, and anxiety and depression in adolescent
and adult women. Dr. Duggal's therapy approach is eclectic and pragmatic,
incorporating both cognitive-behavioral and dynamic techniques. She
also leads Dialectical Behavior Therapy groups, works with individual
clients in the DBT program at the Wake Kendall Group, and presents workshops
on DBT to professionals. Dr. Duggal is a member of the American Psychological
Association and has served as Secretary of the Maryland Psychological
Association and Chair of the Maryland Psychological Association's Board
of Ethical Affairs.
Kathy Nitz, Ph.D. Psychologist
Dr. Nitz is a clinical psychologist who received her B.A. from Kent
State University, MS from Pennsylvania State University and Ph.D. from
George Washington University. She trained at the National Institute
of Child Health and Human Development and the Department of Pediatrics,
University of Maryland School of Medicine. Prior to joining the Wake
Kendall Group in 1999, she was on the faculty in the Division of Adolescent
Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She also
worked at Children's Hospital and Health Center in San Diego, CA. Dr.
Nitz specializes in assessment of children, adolescents, and young adults,
and school consultation. She is the author or coauthor of numerous book
chapters and articles on adolescent development.
Frances Brookner, Psy.D. Psychologist
Dr. Frances Brookner received a B.A. from Mount Holyoke College, an
M.B.A. from New York University Graduate School of Business Administration,
a M.A. in Developmental Psychology from Columbia University, and a Psy.D.
from George Washington University. Prior to becoming a psychologist,
Dr. Brookner was a senior executive in banking, specializing in commercial
real estate and media communications. After completing her Psy.D., Dr.
Brookner received training in Object Relations Couples Therapy through
the Washington School of Psychiatry and intensive training in Dialectical
Behavior Therapy from Behavioral Technology. Dr. Brookner worked at
NIMH examining familial risk factors and vulnerability for childhood-onset
schizophrenia. She also worked at the John L. Gildner Regional Institute
for Children and Adolescents treating severely emotionally disturbed
children and adolescents in a community-based day and residential treatment
center. At the Wake Kendall Group, Dr. Brookner conducts psychological
and psychoeducational evaluations of children and adolescents and serves
as a consultant to independent schools. The primary focus of her therapy
practice, utilizing both cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic approaches,
is adolescents, adults, couples, and parent guidance.
Risa Broudy, Ph.D. Psychologist
Dr. Risa Broudy received her B.A. from Washington University in St.
Louis and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from St. John's University
in New York, where she specialized in working with children and adolescents.
She has worked in residential, inpatient, and outpatient settings. She
completed her internship in the Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Department
at St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital Center in Manhattan. Dr. Broudy works
with children, adolescents, and adults using primarily cognitive behavioral
therapy. She also administers neuropsychological, psycho-educational,
and psychological assessments. With intensive training in Dialectical
Behavior Therapy, Dr. Broudy conducts individual DBT and runs skills
training groups. In addition to her work with the Wake Kendall practice,
Dr. Broudy currently directs the psychology training clinic in the clinical/community
Ph.D. program at George Washington University. Along with her responsibilities
as director, she teaches cognitive and personality assessment and supervises
students' assessment and therapy cases.
Alexandra Cargo, Ph.D. Psychologist
Dr. Cargo received her B.A. in Psychology from Smith College, her M.Ed.
in Special Education-Learning Disabilities from the University of Maryland,
and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from American University. She taught
in the public schools and then worked at The Kingsbury Center for many
years as an educational diagnostician, school consultant, and tutor
before receiving her clinical training. Her dissertation research at
NIMH examined the role of IQ, executive dysfunction, and risk for learning
disabilities in preschool misconduct. In 1992, Dr. Cargo joined The
Wake Kendall Group where she does admissions testing and evaluation
of young children through adults for a wide range of issues. In Columbia,
MD, she is a therapist at Family and Children's Services of Central
MD, a nonprofit community counseling center. There she specializes in
play therapy with children and treatment of adolescents and adults.
Dr. Cargo is a member of APA and MPA.
Adair Fox, M.S.W., M.A.
Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker
Ms. Adair Fox received her B.A. from Williams College and graduate degrees
from the University of California at Berkeley (a Master's in Social
Work and M.A. in School Psychology). She completed postgraduate training
in psycho-educational assessment and psychoanalytic treatment of children
and adolescents at the Ann Martin Center in Oakland, California. Prior
to joining the Wake Kendall Group, Ms. Fox worked for fifteen years
in Northern California as a teacher, school psychologist, clinical social
worker, supervisor, and consultant to school-based mental health programs.
She also taught college courses in Child Development and Bereavement.
Building on her interest in clinical work with diverse family structures,
Ms. Fox conducted significant research and published articles on the
experiences of children in foster care. In 2006, Ms. Fox returned to
her hometown of DC and joined the Wake Kendall Group where she works
with children, adolescents, and adults. She assists assessment teams
with psycho-educational evaluations. As a therapist, Ms. Fox utilizes
cognitive behavioral and psychodynamic approaches. She is also a member
of Wake Kendall's Dialectical Behavior Therapy team.
Sarah Halpert, M.A. Therapist
Ms. Sarah Halpert received a Sc.B. in Behavioral Neuroscience from Brown
University and an M.A. in General Psychology from The Catholic University
of America (CUA). Ms. Halpert is currently working towards her Ph.D
in Clinical Psychology at CUA where she has completed practicums in
assessment, psychotherapy, and family therapy. In addition, Ms. Halpert
is conducting research on the impact of chronic stress on cognitive,
mental, and emotional capacities, particularly in older caregivers of
individuals with dementia. Ms. Halpert takes an integrative approach
to therapy with a focus on cognitive-behavioral and dynamic techniques.
At the Wake Kendall Group, Ms. Halpert works with a wide range of presenting
issues primarily in children, adolescents, and young adults. She is
also a member of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy team and co-leads
DBT groups as well as working individually with DBT clients.
Siobhan O'Neil Hannes, Psy.D. Psychologist
Dr. Hannes received a B.A. from Georgetown University and a doctorate
in clinical psychology from The George Washington University. The focus
of her study was psychological and neuropsychological assessment. Before
joining the Wake Kendall Group, Dr. Hannes completed a postdoctoral
internship at the Woodburn Center for Community Mental Health, where
she provided psychotherapy and administered psychological assessments
to adults with persistent mental illness and children with emotional
disturbances. Dr. Hannes also conducted court-ordered personality, family
functioning, psycho-educational, and dispositional evaluations for adults
and adolescents for the Arlington Juvenile and Domestic Relations District
Court Services Unit. In addition to serving as a consultant to independent
area schools, Dr. Hannes conducts psychological, neuropsychological,
and psycho-educational evaluations of individuals of all ages. She provides
cognitive and insight-oriented therapy to adolescents and adults.
Kate Hawkins, D.Clin.Psyc Psychologist
Dr. Hawkins comes from the U.K., where she received her B.A. from the
University of Nottingham and her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from
the University of Southampton. She has received extensive post-doctoral
training in Systemic Family Therapy from the Tavistock Center in London.
Before moving to the DC area, Dr. Hawkins worked with children and adolescents
affected by a range of developmental and psychological disorders. She
developed a keen interest and specialist knowledge in the diagnosis
and treatment of autistic spectrum disorders and learning disabilities.
At the Wake Kendall Group, Dr. Hawkins conducts psychological and psycho-educational
evaluations of children, adolescents and young adults. Her therapy with
children and adolescents incorporates cognitive-behavioral and systemic
approaches.
Jack Huntington, Psy.D. Psychologist
Dr. Jack Huntington received his B.A. from Middlebury College and an
M.A. in Philosophy from Indiana University. After teaching high school
in England and Germany for 5 years, he returned to the United States
where he earned a Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from the California
School of Professional Psychology in San Francisco. He completed his
American Psychological Association pre-doctoral internship at Columbia
University, Manhattan, where he worked at two hospitals with both in
and out patient populations. He spent one year as the coordinator of
the Suburban Hospital Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Program in Bethesda,
Maryland. Currently, he is the full time Middle School Psychologist
at Sidwell Friends School, in addition to his private practice at Wake
Kendall. His therapy incorporates cognitive-behavioral and solution
focused approaches mainly in working with pre- adolescent, teenage,
and young adult populations.
Peggy Kane, M.A. Educational Diagnostician
Ms. Kane received her B.A. in English from the College of New Rochelle,
M.A.'s in English and Counseling from Catholic University, and there
passed her doctoral comprehensives in Counseling/Special Education.
She has taught in both middle and high schools. From 1969-1980, she
was an educational diagnostician at the Kingsbury Center and Director
of Testing from 1978-1980. She has consulted in several Washington,
DC independent schools and has directed workshops for administrators,
counselors, teachers, tutors, and parents. At the request of the General
Accounting Office, she and two colleagues conducted a study of the relationship
between learning disabilities and delinquency in juvenile offenders,
which was submitted to the US Congress. In 2000 Ms. Kane joined the
Wake Kendall Group where she continued independent school consultation,
conducts psycho-educational assessments of children and adults, and
does admissions testing for independent schools. Her focus in teaching
and in testing has been to help students to appreciate their learning
strengths and to use appropriate remediation and accommodations to realize
their goals.
Stephen O'Connor, M.A.
Mr.
Stephen O'Connor received a B.A. in Psychology from The University of
Tennessee and an M.A. in General Psychology from The Catholic University
of America. Mr. O'Connor is currently working towards his Ph.D. in Clinical
Psychology at CUA where he has completed practicums in assessment, psychotherapy,
and group therapy. In addition, Mr. O'Connor is conducting research
on suicide prevention, with particular emphasis on the Collaborative
Assessment and Management of Suicide-Problem Solving Treatment (CAMS-PST).
Mr. O'Connor's therapy approach is integrative, with a focus on cognitive-behavioral
and dynamic techniques. At the Wake Kendall Group, Mr. O'Connor works
with adolescents and adults on a wide range of presenting issues. He
is also a member of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy team and co-leads
DBT groups as well as working individually with DBT clients.
Bronwen Rankin, Ph.D. Psychologist
Dr. Rankin received her B.A. in Psychology at Rice University and her
M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from George Mason University.
Before beginning clinical work, Dr. Rankin conducted cognitive and developmental
psychology research. She interned at Virginia Treatment Center for Children,
Medical College of Virginia, treating children and adolescents in day,
residential, and acute settings. Dr. Rankin has worked with a variety
of adult and child clients at several community mental health agencies.
With intensive training in Dialectical Behavior therapy, she is a member
of the DBT team at Wake Kendall, leading adult groups and conducting
individual DBT. Dr. Rankin performs psychological and psycho-educational
evaluations of children and adolescents and serves as a consultant to
independent schools. Her therapy approach is eclectic, using cognitive-behavioral
techniques with an awareness of dynamic processes. Dr. Rankin's therapy
practice includes individual child, adolescent, and adult work as well
as parenting and family work.
Mary Alice Silverman, Ph.D.
Psychologist
Dr. Mary Alice Silverman received her B.A. in Psychology from Duke University,
her M.A. in Child Development from Tufts University and her Ph.D. in
Clinical Psychology from Catholic University. She did her doctoral internship
at the University of Maryland Medical Center, which included year-long
rotations at the School Mental Health Program, Children's Day Hospital
and the Pediatric Emergency Department. She has extensive interest and
experience working with children and teachers in school settings. Dr.
Silverman joined the Wake Kendall Group in 2005 and has focused her
practice on the evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents.
She has particular interest in the assessment and treatment of younger
children (ages four to twelve). Her therapy approach is eclectic and
pragmatic, incorporating play-based, cognitive-behavioral, supportive,
and dynamic approaches. Dr. Silverman is a member of the American Psychological
Association and serves on the Steering Committee at the CCBC Children's
Center.
Lenni Gimple Snyder, M.A.
Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor
Ms. Snyder, M.A., is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor at Wake
Kendall and in private practice in Kensington, Maryland. She received
her B.S. in Family Studies from The University of Maryland and her M.A.
in Counseling from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
As part of her graduate work, she trained at the Psychiatric Institute
of Washington, D.C. with Adolescents and Adults in Expressive Therapies,
and was instrumental in the beginnings of the Weight Management Program
at the George Washington University. She has post-graduate training
from The Washington School of Psychiatry in Infant and Young Child Mental
Health and has received extensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
For many years, Ms. Snyder worked with area preschools in identification
of at-risk children and in their parent education programs. Her special
interests are with attachment disorders, children and families, adolescents
and adults with anxiety and depression and other regulatory issues.
She is a member of the American Mental Health Counselors Association
and the International Play Therapy Association and is a guest speaker
at the Washington School of Psychiatry.
